Laylatul Qadr (also known as the Night of Power or the Night of Decree) is one of the most important and sacred nights in the Islamic calendar.

In Ramadan, the Night of Qadr falls on the last ten nights of this holy month. The last third of Ramadan is an opportunity to gain even more abundant rewards for our good deeds.

On this special night, our prayers, good deeds and donations are multiplied in ways that are hard to imagine. 💫

Allah (Sunhana wa ta'alla) says in the Qur'an:

‘The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.’ (Surah Al-Qadr, 97:3)

This is a time when we can gain immense blessings by helping those who need it most. Every penny donated on this night can bring not only joy and support to those in need, but also countless rewards for you in mortal and eternal life.

What is the night of power - the meaning of Laylat-al-Qadr

What is Laylatul Qadr?

Laylatul Qadr (also Laylat-al-Qadr, Laylat-ul Qadr) is one of the most important and sacred nights in the Islamic calendar. It is also referred to as the Night of Power or the Night of Decree and is a night filled with many opportunities for endless rewards.

Laylatul Qadr is also exactly the night when the Qur'an was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and then to mankind. This is why Ramadan is known as the month of the Qur'an.

When does Laylatul Qadr fall in 2025?

It is commonly believed that the Night of Power falls on the 27th day of Ramadan. This year, the night will fall on the evening of 27 March 2025, depending on moon observations.

However, mankind will never know the exact date of Laylatul Qadr. Allah (Subhana wa ta'alla) has predestined it for us and He knows best.

What we do know is that this blessed night is most likely one of the odd nights in the last 10 nights of Ramadan. As mentioned in this hadith:

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) advised: „Szukajcie jej w nieparzyste noce ostatnich dziesięciu nocy miesiąca Ramadan”. (Bukhari i Muslim)

Therefore, many hadith scholars recommend focusing on making the most of the last 10 nights of Ramadan as a whole. Because, depending on the sighting of the moon, Laylatul Qadr can fall on any of these 10 nights.

‘The shadow of the believers on the Day of Resurrection will be their charity’.

(Tirmidhi)

‘Sadaqah extinguishes sin as water extinguishes fire’.
(Tirmidhi)

Why is Laylatul Qadr called the Night of Power?

In the Holy Qur'an Laylatul Qadr is described in an important and sublime way. In one that illustrates the importance of what this night brings to humanity.

Allah (Subhana wa ta'alla) speaks of the purpose of this night:

‘Ha, Meem. For this Book is bright! We sent it down on the blessed night. - Verily, We are the Warners! During this night is resolved every wise command. As a command coming from Us - Verily, We are the messengers!’
(Qur'an 44:1-5)

What makes the Night of Power so important in Islam?

Laylatul Qadr is the holiest night in the Islamic calendar. It also marks one of the most important events in Islamic history: the revelation of the Qur'an.

During the month of Ramadan in 610 AD. Qur'an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). Thus began the Prophethood of the Messenger of Allah with a message for humanity for the rest of existence.

As a result, Muslims around the world are encouraged to seek out this night of worship during Ramadan in the hope of winning many rewards.

Laylatul Qadr in the Qur'an

In the Qur'an, the entire sura of Al-Qadr mentions Laylatul Qadr. An entire chapter is dedicated by Allah (Subhana wa ta'alla) to the description of this abundant night in these precious verses:

"We actually revealed this in 'Night of Power'. And what will explain to you what a night of power is? The Night of Power is better than a thousand months. In it, the Angels and the Spirit descend, with Allah's permission, on every matter. "Peace! Until the morning rises!"

(Koran  97:1-5)

Observing Laylatul Qadr and its signs

Signs of Laylatul Qadr

Only Allah knows exactly what Laylatul Qadr looks like. However, He directs to certain signs to determine her presence.

Two of the most authentic Qadr Night signs are:

  • The sun rises early in the morning without rays. Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘On the morning following Laylat-ul Qadr, the sun rises without any rays, as if it were a brass vessel, until it rises’.. (Hadith  Muslim)
  • The night is pleasant and peaceful. Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allah be pleased with him), said:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Laylat-ul Qadr is calm and pleasant, neither hot nor cold, the sun rises in the morning being weak and red’.. (Hadith Ibn Khuzaimah)

How do we celebrate the Night of Power?

Although Laylatul Qadr is the most important night of the year, it is not a solemn night. Rather, Muslims are encouraged to observe it through additional Ibadah (worship).

This can include activities such as giving Zakat (alms) and Sadaqah (voluntary alms), saying Nafl (voluntary prayers) and performing Du'a.

In some cases, communities may encourage each other to gather at the mosque on the last ten nights to pray or raise funds for Sadaqah in the hope of winning additional prizes.

However, the Night of Power can be celebrated at home in solitude - alone you can indulge in prayer about worship; or you can make a donation to those in need online for example .

However, there is no strict way to observe Laylayul Qadr. Therefore, let us try our best to capture this blessed night and its rewards by concentrating and perfecting our Ibadah (acts of worship) as best we can!

THE POWER OF IBADAH DURING LAYLATUL QADR

During Laylatul Qadr, there are many opportunities to earn rewards. Muslims are encouraged to engage in Dhikr prayer (remembering Allah) and reciting voluntary prayers (nafl). Deeds are multiplied on this holy night, so praying just two rakat can equal 83 years of Salah!

The night is also a great time to reflect and ask Allah (Subhana wa ta'alla) for forgiveness by performing Du'a. It is a time to make an intention to improve our conduct and refrain from returning to our sins.

In turn, another virtuous act is to give Sadaqah to those who need our help. The Prophet (ﷺ) himself was particularly generous during (Muslim).

In general, there are many ibadahs (acts of worship) that one can engage in to increase one's rewards during this blessed night.

The best night for worship

The reward for any righteous act performed in Laylatul Qadr is equivalent to performing the same act every day for 83 years, SubhanAllah!

Our Prophet (ﷺ) has advised us to maximise the benefits of this Holy Night and appreciate its importance in our deen. Some of the best deeds we can do to reap the rewards of the Holy Night are praying, seeking repentance and giving Sadaqah.

Performing Du'a during the Laylatul Qadr

Muslims are encouraged to follow the beautiful example of the Prophet (ﷺ) during Laylatul Qadr and maximise their worship and good deeds.

On this blessed night, turn to Allah (Subhana wa ta'alla) with sincerity and perform du'a from the bottom of your heart. In addition to performing du'a for yourself, make sure you perform du'a for your loved ones, those who are oppressed, humanity and the creatures of Allah (Subhana wa ta'alla).

It is especially important to perform du'a for our Muslim brothers and sisters around the world. That Allah (Subhana wa ta'alla) grant them peace and patience and meet their needs.
