What is Fidya?

Fidya, is a compulsory charitable donation which must be made if you are unable to fast during Ramadan.

When you are unable to fast, Allah (swt) still allows you to share in the reward of Ramadan by donating Fidya to the poor. Fidya is obligatory upon the person who cannot fast for a valid health-related reason.

Paying Fidya means you are able to relieve the hunger of a fasting person by providing them with Suhoor and Iftar meals and achieve more this Ramadan.

If you need to pay Fidya, you should aim to donate enough funds to feed a poor person two whole meals for each missed day of fasting.

Feeding someone in need in this way relieves hunger and the religious obligation upon you. It means you can do more during Ramadan for those in need.

How Much is Fidya for Ramadan 2021?

Fidya is typically 9zl 9per day where a fast has been missed. This equates to a maximum Fidya charity donation of £150 for the entire month of Ramadan. The price of Fidya fluctuates year on year in line with the price of basic staple foods. This will provide an individual living in poverty with two nutritious meals which could not only bring hope and happiness but save lives too.

Am I eligible to pay Fidya this Ramadan?

You may have missed or been exempt from fasting due to pregnancy, illness, old age or any other reason which prevents you from making the fasts up later. If you fall into any of these categories, then you must strive to pay Fidya.

“(The prescribed fast is for) a certain number of days. Whoever among you does not fast on those days because you are sick or on a journey, then (you should fast) the same number of days on other days. Those who are able to fast are also required to pay a fee (which is equivalent to the cost) of feeding a desperate person. ” (Al-Baqarah 2:184)

What if I miss my fast without a valid reason?

If you miss a fast without an appropriate reason then you are not eligible for paying Fidya. Instead, you should pay Kaffarah, which is the act of either fasting for 60 continuous days or feeding 60 poor individuals for each missed day’s fast. You can learn more about Kaffarah payment here.

The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: “Whoever gives Iftaar to one who is fasting will have a reward like his, without that detracting from the reward of the fasting person in the slightest.” Tirmidhi
