FAMINE IN NIGERIA: HOW THE A & A RAINBOW HEARTS FOUNDATION IS SAVING CHILDREN AND FIGHTING FOR THEIR FUTURE

INTRODUCTION

Hunger is a silent predator that instils fear in the hearts of millions of people around the world. In Nigeria, this fear translates into a daily struggle for survival, especially for those most vulnerable among us - children. The A & A Rainbow Hearts Around The World Foundation has been dedicated to tackling this crisis for the past five years, providing vital aid and food to children suffering from hunger.

FAMINE IN NIGERIA - HELP US SAVE CHILDREN'S LIVES

Every day in Nigeria, millions of children wake up with a feeling of hunger that will not go away. This is not a temporary lack of food, but a deep, debilitating hunger that leads to death. For many children in northern Nigeria, this is a daily reality. As part of our mission, A & A Rainbow Hearts Around The World Foundation has been fighting to save their lives for the past five years.

Our nutrition programme during Ramadan

Every year during Ramadan, our Foundation provides meals to 50,000 children in several villages in northern Nigeria. This is a huge achievement, but our feeding programme should run all year round because children in Nigeria die of hunger every day. Unfortunately, we lack the resources to provide daily support.

Scale of hunger in Nigeria

UN agencies state in their reports, That in Nigeria some 11 million children suffer from acute malnutrition and are at risk of dying from hunger. This number is overwhelming - that's almost the entire population of New York City!

i są zagrożeni śmiercią głodową. Liczba ta jest przytłaczająca - to prawie cała populacja Nowego Jorku!

Why are children in Nigeria dying of starvation?

Armed conflicts and violence

Northern Nigeria has for years been an area of activity for armed terrorist groups such as Boko Haram, but not only that - Christian militias are equally active in Nigeria, engaged in kidnapping for ransom and in the trafficking of human beings and human organs. Because of this, millions of people have had to flee their homes, leaving behind farmland and their only sources of livelihood. Instability means no food, and whole communities are cut off from aid.

Climate change

Climate change, including unpredictable droughts and floods, has devastated much of Nigeria's agricultural land. Farmers can no longer count on stable harvests, leading to hunger among both farming families and communities dependent on local crops.

Poverty

Despite Nigeria being Africa's richest resource-rich country, many families in Nigeria live in extreme poverty. Without access to work, healthcare and education, they are unable to break out of the cycle of poverty, leading to lack of food and malnutrition for children. Poverty compounds the crisis because families have no way to improve their situation.

How can you help children in Nigeria?

Children waiting for our volunteers with their meals

The A & A Rainbow Hearts Around The World Foundation does everything it can to provide food for children. Every donation helps us provide meals to children in Nigeria and save lives. Our feeding programme works in the hardest-hit areas such as Borno State, Yobe, and Nasarawa but we need more support to help throughout the year. Without your help, these children have no chance of survival.

Children of the desert love the bread baked in our bakery

Our refugee camp in Borno State has become a refuge for 840 orphans, offering them a safe place where they can dream of a better future. However, our resources are running out. Especially now, after the recent flooding, the situation is very difficult. The water took away all our crops and destroyed vegetables and cereals just before harvest. We have a huge responsibility on our shoulders - organising meals for such a huge number of children and filling their plates so that they can grow and develop like other children in the world and the feeling of an empty, aching tummy.

10 VERSES AND HADIS ON SOCIAL SOLIDARITY AND THE FIGHT AGAINST HUNGER, I.E. ISLAM'S ATTITUDE TOWARDS HUNGER

Islam uses solidarity to fight hunger. In Islam, it is unacceptable for people to live below the poverty line while others spend crores on unnecessary luxuries. Meeting the needs of the underprivileged is the duty and responsibility of every Muslim. The Qur'an describes this as a right for those in need; it is not a favour on the part of the giver, but a duty and responsibility he owes to the community. Zakat, one form of such social solidarity, is one of the pillars of Islam. Zakat should be distributed among its legal recipients. Those who are unable to support themselves and their families and cannot find suitable work have the right to be supported by society in a way that protects their dignity and honour, knowing that this is the law laid down for them by Allah Almighty.

Any wealth, all that we possess belongs to Allah, and we are only trustees of the wealth given to us. It is our duty to share with the poor and distribute zakat according to the command of the original Owner, Allah Almighty.

An important responsibility

  1. Allah Almighty says:

Believe in God and in His Messenger! Give out of that which He has made you heirs. Those among you who believe and distribute - they will receive a great reward.” (Al-Hadid 57:7)

  1. Allah Almighty says:

O ye who believe! Verily, many of the scribes - rabbis and monks - consume in vain the possessions of the people, and give them away from the way of God. And to those who gather gold and silver and do not distribute them in the way of God - proclaim a painful punishment! (At-Tawbah 9:34)

Characteristics of true believers

  1. Allah Almighty says:

"Give out of what God has bestowed on you,’ then those who do not believe say to those who believe: ‘Shall we feed those whom God could feed if He willed? Ye are but in manifest error.  (Yasin 36:47)

  1. Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) conveyed that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:He is not a true believer who eats to his heart's content when his brother is hungry”. (Uwierzytelnione przez Al-Albani)
  2. Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) conveyed that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The worst food is the wedding banquet, to which only the rich are invited, while the poor are not invited.... (Al-Bukhari)
  3. Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) conveyed that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Every day (...) two angels come down from Heaven and one of them says: 'O Allah! Reward everyone who spends (in Your cause)', and the other (angel) says: ‘O Allah! Przynieś zniszczenie temu, kto się wstrzymuje. (Al-Bukhari i Muslim)
  4. Adi ibn Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ’Save yourself from the fires of hell even by giving half a date fruit (in alms)." (Al-Bukhari)

Great examples

These clear guidelines were truly adopted and applied by the early Muslims. An incredible spirit of solidarity and giving permeated Muslim society and resulted in wonderful examples that were recorded in the Qur'an and Sunnah.

  1. Allah Almighty says:

‘They gave food - out of love for Him - to the poor, the orphan and the slave. We feed you only for the face of God, and we want neither reward nor gratitude from you. Verily, we fear on the part of our Lord a dark, wretched Day." (Al-Insan 76:8-10)

  1. Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) conveyed that the Prophet ( peace and blessings be upon him) said: When the people of the Ash`ari tribe ran out of food during battles or ran out of food for their families in Medina, they collected all the remaining food in one sheet and then distributed it among themselves equally, measuring it out with a bowl. These people are from me and I am from them. (Al-Bukhari i Muslim)

An amazing story

  1. Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:

A man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I am suffering from fatigue and hunger’.

Prorok (pokój i błogosławieństwo niech będą z nim) wysłał (kogoś) do swoich żon (po coś), ale Posłaniec nic u nich nie znalazł. Posłaniec Allaha powiedział więc (do swoich towarzyszy). Is there no one to entertain this man tonight so that Allah will be merciful to him?”.

Mężczyzna z plemienia Ansari wstał i powiedział: „Ja go zabawię, Posłańcu Allaha!”. Poszedł więc do swojej żony i powiedział jej: „To jest gość Posłańca Allaha, więc nie ukrywaj przed nim niczego”.

She replied. ‘By God, I have nothing but food for the children.’

He said: ‘When the children ask for dinner, put them to bed and turn off the light (so that the guest does not realise that they are not eating); we will not eat meals tonight.’

In the morning, a man from the Ansari tribe went to the Messenger of Allah, who said: ‘Allah wondered or laughed (at the good deed) of such and such a man and woman (a man of the Ansari tribe and his wife)’.

Then Allah revealed: And those who have fortified themselves in their house and in their faith before them, love those who have exiled themselves to them, and find no desire in their hearts for that; which has been given to those. They give them preference, even if poverty were their lot. And he who preserves himself from the stinginess of his own soul will be happy. (Al-Haszr 59:9)
