Gaza – one child dies every hour. Save the Children alerts the world
On 6 September 2025, the international organisation Save the Children issued a shocking statement. During 23 months of conflict in the Gaza Strip, Israeli armed forces killed an average of more than one Palestinian child per hour. The number of children killed has already exceeded 20 000This is a frightening statistic that cannot be ignored.
Statistics that keep you awake at night
According to data published by the government press office in Gaza:
- From October 2023 to September 2025, at least 20,000 children, which represents approximately 2% of the child population in Gaza.
- At least 1,009 of the children killed were under one year old., and almost half of them were born and died during the war.
- Over 42,000 children have been injured., and at least 21,000 of them remained permanently disabled..
- Thousands of children are missing or buried under the rubble of destroyed buildings.
Gaza: Hunger – the silent killer of children in Gaza
After nearly two years of conflict, the lives of children in Gaza are threatened daily not only by bombs, but also by hunger. The figures from September 2025 are terrifying:
- Over a million people, including half are children, is suffering from catastrophic famine (level 5 on the IPC scale).
- At least 132,000 children under the age of five are at risk of death due to acute malnutrition.
- Since the famine was declared on 22 August, 135 children, including 20 in recent weeks.
Destroyed infrastructure – children's futures buried under rubble
Israeli bombing destroyed almost all of the infrastructure necessary for life:

- Children are seven times more likely to die as a result of blast injuries than adults. Their fragile bodies require specialised care, which is no longer available in Gaza.
Gaza: Parents' voices – indescribable pain
Save the Children's mental health and psychosocial support team in Gaza shared some harrowing stories from parents:
- Parents whose children have been torn apart speak of pain greater than anyone should have to endure. They speak of lost hugs, laughter and tears. For them, every breath is painful.
- Mothers and fathers mourn their children while battling hunger, displacement and constant bombardment. Their lives are a never-ending nightmare.
Save the Children: ‘This is a war against children’
Ahmad Alhendawi, Regional Director for the Middle East, North Africa and Eastern Europe at Save the Children, said:
‘It's a shameful statistic – a terrifying new low in a war characterised by a constant stream of such data. The worst thing is that we saw it coming. The world is doing nothing to stop it.’
Alhendawi emphasised that:
‘This war is a deliberate attack on the children of Gaza and their future. Unless the international community takes decisive action, we face a very real risk of the complete annihilation of future generations of Palestinians.’
Gaza and the international obligation to protect children
Save the Children has called for an immediate and complete ceasefire and unrestricted access to humanitarian aid.
Children are subject to additional protection under international humanitarian law. Compliance with these rules is not optional – it is the obligation of every state. – podkreślono w oświadczeniu.
The organisation appealed for:
- An immediate ceasefire.
- Ensuring unrestricted access to humanitarian aid.
- Suspension of transfers of arms, parts and ammunition used against children and civilians.
